About me

Hi, I’m Trista! Let me give you a little snippet into who I am as a human being. I moved at the age of 13 from Mississippi to a small West Texas Town. In 2017, I began my undergraduate journey in interdisciplinary studies at Texas Tech University (TTU). I stayed in Lubbock to begin my master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy at TTU in 2020. Yep, I was in what my program called the “COVID Cohort”. It was an interesting time to say the least. I am married to my lovely husband, Wesley, and we have two beautiful fur babies, Caroline and Luna. My hobbies include trying to keep my plants alive, playing tennis, and escaping to fantasy book worlds.

I have always had a passion for helping others and consider myself a lifetime learner. For a long time, my dream career was to be a Neonatal Physician or a Gynecologist. When I was a kid I would watch those cheesy TLC shows about birth and parenting. It was always interesting to me. While it seems this was still a part of God’s plan for me, He went about it in a different way. I found my passion for counseling when I began working at an inpatient addiction recovery center as a residential aid. I absolutely loved my job because it really put the important things in life into perspective. I saw the magic happen when clients went through the family program. It was amazing to see these people who had not had the recovery light bulb come on until after having family therapy. I knew that I wanted to be a part of this change. To this day, I love working with families and couples whose goal is to rebuild their relationships broken by addiction.

I enjoy working with couples doing marital and pre-marital counseling as well as aiding families in navigating life transitions. My passion, though, is working with couples and/or individuals struggling with infertility issues, the perinatal period, and postpartum mental health. In addition to being a trained Marriage and Family Therapist, I have extensive training from Postpartum Support International as well as EMDR training specifically for this population. I find it is important to tackle these far too common issues as a team. As human beings we are not meant to be alone, it takes a village to thrive in life. I want to be a part of your village so that you can thrive.

Training and Specialty

Perinatal & Postpartum Care

I have received specified trainings on mental health concerns during and after pregnancy through Postpartum Support International. Additionally, I have received EMDR training for the treatment of birth and pregnancy related trauma from Touchstone Institute. Research is showing that its not about if you struggle with postpartum, it is about when you will. Its a good idea to establish care while pregnant so that a plan of action can be created in preparation for the hormonal rollercoaster we call the fourth trimester.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a therapy technique used for the treatment of trauma. EMDR allows for the client to change their cognition and emotional response to distressing memories. I have invested in advance EMDR training for the treatment of complex disorders (C-PTSD, dissociative disorders, personality disorders), OCD and phobias, infertility, and pregnancy/postpartum mental health.

Medical Professionals

I have various experiences working with medical professionals. Much of my experience comes from working as an employee assistance program therapist for University Medical Center (UMC). In this position, I not only worked with hospital staff and first responders, I also worked with their families. Additionally, I have had some exposure to treating addiction in this population as well.

Gottman Level I & II

The Gottman method is a widely validated technique for couples therapy. This approach can be utilized to support couples in building conflict management skills and increasing intimacy. This approach can be beneficial regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or length of relationship.

Question. Persuade. Refer. (QPR)

QPR is an approach utilized to provide appropriate resources for persons suffering from suicidal ideation. With this certification, I can provide trainings for groups of up to 35 people. This is a great option for organizations or businesses who interact with persons suffering with suicidality and want to be better prepared.

Addiction

I gained most of my experience from working at an inpatient treatment facility for addiction. Additionally, addiction was one of my concentrations as an undergraduate student. I operate from the disease model. Addiction is a family disease and I have seen recovery be most successful working with the family to help fight the addiction.
