Marriage and Family Therapists operate from a systemic lens. Systems therapy is the belief that problems exists relationally and are maintained by interactions within personal, professional, and social systems. Taking a broader approach to treatment can empower relationships to allow for collective growth and healing. In simple terms, no one person is the problem but certain interactions can be problematic. Our training required 250 direct hours working with families and couples on top of 250 hours of individual therapy. Additionally, we started in the therapy room with clients in our first semester of our masters program. This allowed for us to apply what we were learning in real time. On top of this, after graduation, we are required to work under a supervisor for 3000 hours for a minimum duration of 2 years. 500 of these must be direct relational hours; working with families and couples. As a comparison, other mental health professionals are not required to have direct therapy interactions with couples and families.
